Town Hall Meeting, Wednesday, May 1

Grange Hall, Amherst Historical Society's Sandstone Village, Amherst OhioI will be hosting a Town Hall meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1st, 2013 at Grange Hall in the Amherst Historical Society’s Sandstone Village located at 763 Milan Avenue in Amherst, Ohio.

We will have two guest speakers: Amherst Schools Superintendent Steve Sayers will discuss the upcoming levies, and Amherst Athletic Association President Chuck Winiarski will discuss the planned baseball field additions behind Faith Baptist Church on North Lake Street.

2013 Amherst Ohio Street Rehabilitation Program

Amherst City Council has approved Mayor David Taylor’s request for the 2013 Amherst Ohio Street Repair / Rehabilitation program. The total cost for this year’s project will be an estimated $1,237,400.00.  The streets being repaired are listed below.

Additionally, the current one-way streets of Shupe and Ann near Shupe school will be changed to two way streets this summer.

Water Rate Increase Now in Effect

Beginning today, January 1, 2013, the City of Amherst, Ohio has begun instituting a 4% increase in the water rate for all Amherst, Ohio utility customers.

Amherst maintains a “water fund” that covers the projected operation, maintenance, debt service and capital improvements for the city’s water system. This fund covers the purchase of water, debt payments, and repair and improvements to the water infrastructure. This account has been declining over the past two years and was projected to continue to decline without an increase in the water rate.

2013 Christmas Tree Pickup

The City of Amherst, Ohio’s free Christmas tree pick up will run this year from Wednesday, January 2, 2013, weather permitting through Friday morning, January 11, 2013. Trees must be placed on the tree lawn with all decorations removed.

2012 Trick or Treat Date Changed

Due to the forecasted weather conditions, Trick or Treat has been changed to Sunday, November 4th, 2012 from 6-7:30 p.m.

Trick or Treat

Amherst’s Trick or Treat for 2012 will be held on Wednesday, October 31st, 2012 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Halloween Parade & Costume Contest

The Amherst Fire Department is again sponsoring the annual Amherst Ohio Halloween Parade and Costume contest, which will be held on Sunday, October 28th, 2012. Registration for the costume contest will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the San Spring Building at 480 Park Avenue, Amherst, OH. Judging will start promptly with the parade to follow immediately after.

2012 Amherst Ohio Leaf Pickup Schedule

Amherst Ohio leaf pickup for 2012 will begin on Monday, November 5th.  This is a service provided to the residents by the City of Amherst. This is not an Allied Waste service. The pickup schedule is determined by where your home resides in Amherst:

Streets NORTH of the railroad tracks
Leaf pickup will be during the weeks of November 5th and November 19th.

Golfing for Good Government 1st Annual Golf Outing

1st Annual Golfing for Good Government Outing

The 1st Annual Golfing for Good Government Golf Outing is scheduled for October 6, 2012 at the Willow Creek Golf Club in Vermilion, Ohio. The four person scramble golf outing will be a shot gun start at 8:30 a.m. (registration begins at 7:30 a.m.). Cost of the outing is $65 and includes breakfast, lunch, catered dinner, goody bags, and door and skill shot prizes. Teams can also enter the String Game and increase the fun and chances of winning. Sponsorship is also available and welcome.

Internet Sweepstakes Cafes in Amherst

During the Ordinance Committee meeting held last Monday, May 7th 2012, the committee (which consists of all current City Council members) voted 4-3 to send a proposed ordinance to the floor of council for approval that provides for the regulation and licensing of “sweepstakes terminal cafes”. If this proposed legislation becomes an ordinance it will define specific restrictions, puts in place procedures to verify proper operation, and enact a licensing structure on internet cafes / sweepstakes businesses within the city limits of Amherst, Ohio. This proposed legislation DOES NOT ALLOW internet sweepstakes businesses into the city. Internet sweepstakes cafes / businesses currently ARE ALLOWED.
